Earl Thomas Conley was born in Ohio. He joined the US Army after high school. Around this time, he realized his ability to sing. While in the military, he sang with a Christian Trio group. Early Thomas Conley decided to pursue a career in music. He packed his bags and moved to Nashville. He started writing songs and performing in clubs. Eventually, he gave up and moved to Alabama for a job at a steel mill. While working at this steel mill, he met a record producer who helped him get a record deal. So Conley returned to Nashville.
