SAINTS GAMER: Defense Steps Up Against Jacksonville Offense in Low-Scoring Affair

After putting together an outstanding offensive performance against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the New Orleans Saints (5-1) needed another big defensive performance to make up for a poor offensive showing. That’s exactly what the Saints defense did, allowing only two field goals on the way to a 13-6 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars (2-4)

How It Happened:

Neither team could really get out of first gear early on, but the Saints finally got on the board late in the first quarter when Wil Lutz nailed one from 47 yards out. The Jaguars had an opportunity to get out in front late in the first half when they put together a methodical 13-play drive that took seven minutes off the clock but had to settle for a 22-yard field goal to tie things up as both teams headed to the locker room.

The Saints sniffed the endzone off of a pass from Teddy Bridgewater to Latavius Murray but it was nullified by a penalty. Lutz still got points on the board for New Orleans with a chip-shot field goal to make it 6-3. Jacksonville quickly responded with a 32-yard field goal from Josh Lambo to tie things up, but Bridgewater manufactured a solid drive that ended with his second touchdown pass to Jared Cook in as many weeks to seal the deal, giving the Saints their fourth straight victory.

Big Number: 226

The Saints defense kept things under control for much of Sunday’s matchup allowing only 226 total yards on the road. It was even more impressive because they held them at the redzone both times, forcing the Jaguars to settle for field goals.

Player of the Game: Cam Jordan

In the battle of the mustaches, Cam Jordan wins out compared to Jaguars QB Gardner Minshew, but it was all about what he did on the field. Jordan had four total tackles and two huge sacks on Minshew.
