Let’s hop in our metaphorical time machine and take a trip down memory lane.
On May 14th, 1969 the country charts were being topped by Merle Haggard and one of his most famous hits ‘Hungry Eyes’. Haggard’s song is a tribute to those who lived in labor camps during the great depression. The single is also set in the same time period as the great depression.
If we jump ahead to May 14th, 1982 and take a look at the country charts, another familiar name would be found at the top. Willie Nelson was at #1 on the country charts for his single ‘Always on My Mind’. Nelson is one of hundreds of artists who have covered the Brenda Lee song, but Nelson would also go on to win a Grammy Award for his version of the song.
Just two years later on May 14th, 1984 the 19th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards were hosted by Crystal Gayle, Mac Davis, and Charlie Pride. Some top winners from that night include: Lee Greenwood as Top Male Vocalist of the Year, Exile as Top Vocal Group, Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton won Top Vocal Duet of the Year, and the award for Album of the Year went to Alabama.
