Val Kilmer, the versatile actor renowned for his roles in iconic films such as “Top Gun,” “Batman Forever,” and “The Doors,” has died at the age of 65. He passed away on April 1, 2025, in Los Angeles due to complications from pneumonia. ​

Born on December 31, 1959, in Los Angeles, Kilmer displayed an early passion for acting, becoming the youngest student accepted into Juilliard’s Drama Division at the time. He gained prominence with his portrayal of naval aviator Lt. Tom “Iceman” Kazanski in the 1986 blockbuster “Top Gun.” Kilmer’s diverse filmography includes his depiction of Jim Morrison in Oliver Stone’s “The Doors” (1991), the legendary gunslinger Doc Holliday in “Tombstone” (1993), and the Caped Crusader in “Batman Forever” (1995). ​

In 2015, Kilmer was diagnosed with throat cancer, leading to a tracheotomy that affected his speaking voice. Despite these health challenges, he continued to engage in creative endeavors, including a reprisal of his role as Iceman in the 2022 sequel “Top Gun: Maverick,” where his performance was met with critical acclaim. ​

Kilmer’s personal life included a marriage to actress Joanne Whalley from 1988 to 1996, with whom he had two children, Mercedes and Jack. His dedication to his craft and his ability to embody a wide range of characters left an indelible mark on the film industry. ​
