5 Food cravings and what they mean
Sometimes the things you crave are things your body needs the most. Here are 5 common food cravings and what they mean:
- CARBS: If you’re craving carbs it means your body is low on the amino acid tryptophan. Most commonly found in Turkey, Milk and Eggs. Your body uses Tryptophan to help make serotonin, which boosts your mood. Signs you’re not getting enough include bad moods, trouble sleeping and anxiety.
- CHEESE: Your body may be in need of calcium, especially if you’re craving cheese. Calcium is needed to help your nerves and muscles function properly. Other good sources of calcium include milk, yogurt, salmon, broccoli and almonds.
- ICE: Wanting ice to chew may mean you’re anemic and in need of Iron. Another big symptom of anemia is low energy. You can find Iron in red meat, spinach, broccoli, lentils and fish.
- SWEETS: When craving sweets it could mean you’re not getting enough chromium. But eating just sweets could have a negative effect on your sugar levels. There are other great sources of chromium that are a lot more healthier such as: Beef, Chicken, Carrots, Potatoes, Broccoli and Eggs.
- RED MEAT: Another sign you’re body may need Iron or Zinc which helps keep your immune system strong. Great sources of Iron include red meat, spinach, broccoli, lentils and fish. Great sources for Zinc include shellfish, lentils, spinach, pumpkin seeds and cheese.
