According to one report, more than 6000 store closings have taken place in the country since the start of the year and this trend seems it will continue as brick and mortar stores continue to struggle to attract foot traffic into their stores.
We have reported on many of the local store closings in recent months. According to KLFY-TV, there is another discount store closing their doors this year.
The Memphis based general merchandise store Fred’s has announced they will be closing the doors to 159 stores nationwide including 4 locally. The company said the store closing are the retailers who have been underperforming and or have their lease coming up for renewal.
Locally the Fred’s that are closing include the Carencro location on Veterans Drive, the Lafayette location on West Congress plus the Franklin and St. Martinville location.
The history of Fred’s dates back to 1947 when the first store opened in Mississippi and competes against discount stores such as Dollar General and Dollar Tree.

These stores will be closed by the end of May.
