The Better Business Bureau of Acadiana is warning residents about an email scam involving gift card purchases. Good people are always willing to help a friend. Scammers are preying on that.
They send an email, posing as a friend. It goes like this. The scammer reaches out, saying they’re out of town for a birthday celebration, or something similar, and having trouble purchasing a gift card for the occasion. This is followed by asking you to do the favor of purchasing one locally and sending the information. This is followed by a promise to pay you back upon returning to town. The request may be legitimate, but it’s probably not.
The BBB recommends contacting your friend directly, by phone. Email accounts can be hacked.
