During these summer months, it’s easy to get sick if you stay outside too long.
Dr. Ralph Abraham, Louisiana’s Surgeon General, told our partners at KADN News15 about heat-related illnesses.
“We wanted people to be aware that extreme heat is extremely dangerous,” said Dr. Abraham.
There have already been six heat-related deaths in the state as emergency room visits are on the rise.
“And just become educated as to what to do, what to look for, and how to handle these heat-related issues,” Abraham continued.
Headaches, nausea, dizziness, and a racing heartbeat are some of the symptoms of heat-related illness.
“Don’t wait until you’re thirsty. Don’t wait until you have that headache. Don’t wait until you have the muscle spasms because then, you’re already behind. Drink continuously during the day and do everything you can to stay cool,” explained Dr. Abraham.
“And as we saw in 2023, which was so far, our year … the year of the hottest weather that we recorded, we’re in for, I think, a tough, hot summer.”
If you’re experiencing a heat-related issue, move to a cooler area, lay flat, and immediately rehydrate.
