Here Is What Outer Space Smells Like

If you’ve ever wondered what outer space smells like… we have the answer in the form of a new wearable fragrance! It’s called Eau De Space and supposedly it smells just like outer space.

You may be wondering why the idea for developing such a unique fragrance was even conceived. After all, why would a consumer want to smell like a place they have never been to? Originally it was developed by NASA to train astronauts before launching in orbit, and get them used to the smell of space. They achieved this by having a chemist use notes from astronauts who described the smell of space.

The company that made the scent for NASA recently launched a Kickstarter that currently has over 3K backers, and you can get yourself a small bottle of Eau De Space.

Sure, pretty soon you’ll be able to smell like outer space on a future date… but will it be an attractive smell? The Eau de Space product manager says that it is a hard smell to describe but said it smells a little like gunpowder, seared steak, raspberries, and rum. It’s definitely an odd combination of smells, and not what I would have expected space to smell like.

This isn’t the first time chemistry has been used to recreate a space-related fragrance. The chemist behind Eau De Space worked on a scent exhibition for which he recreated the smell of the inside of the Mir Space Station. This won’t be the last either, they’re looking into releasing another fragrance called “Smell of the Moon”.
