This artist’s impression shows a view of the surface of the planet Proxima b orbiting the red dwarf star Proxima Centauri, the closest star to the Solar System. The double star Alpha Centauri AB also appears in the image to the upper-right of Proxima itself. Proxima b is a little more massive than the Earth and orbits in the habitable zone around Proxima Centauri, where the temperature is suitable for liquid water to exist on its surface.

Scientists are reporting that a new earth-like planet has been discovered and it is close to us! Well close as in a mere 4.22 light-years away just shy of 25 trillion miles.  This new planet is orbiting a star outside of our solar system.  A new planet? Wait..a new earth-like planet that could possibly be the home of aliens.  It seriously sounds like something from a science fiction novel.  Most see a headline like this and just read on to the next article but if one really ponders this discovery, there are so many questions.  What would a new planet mean to our society? Is it close enough to visit? Is this going to be the next vacation destination? Are government officials planning on inhabiting this planet as soon as we use up all the resources on this planet?  According to this article, scientists are still trying to figure just how to get a probe on the planet. It could take 25 years.  So any discoveries or developments involving this “new” planet will probably not happen in this lifetime.  But it is an interesting, to this think about…Check out the article below!

Astronomers have discovered a “second Earth” orbiting our closest star and it could have exactly the right conditions to sustain alien lifeforms.
Stargazers from the European Southern Observatory spotted the mystery world circling Proxima Centauri, a red dwarf star that’s just four light years away.
The planet is orbiting in the “goldilocks zone” of Proxima Centauri, which means it’s close enough to the star that water would not freeze but far away enough so that water wouldn’t boil.
This is important because the presence of liquid water is thought to be necessary for the development of life.
