Patty Loveless spent her childhood in Kentucky. She is a distant relative of Loretta Lynn and Crystal Gayle. She was a young child when she developed a love for country music. Her older sister Dottie was also interested in singing professionally. She often sang at local clubs. Eventually, Patty and her brother Bill joined Dottie calling themselves the Swinging Rameys. Dottie quit performing and got married in 1969.

Roger and Patty continued to sing together. Roger moved to Nashville and landed a job with the Porter Wagoner Show. He convinced Porter Wagoner to listen to his sister Patty sing. After hearing her sing a song that Patty wrote for their father, he thumped his hand on his desk and told the siblings, he was going to help Patty’s career. Wagoner introduced her to Dolly Parton and Dolly told Patty to return home and finish school.

Patty Loveless finally landed a recording contract with MCA in 1985.
