Loretta Lynn taught herself how to play guitar.  Her husband Doolittle Lynn bought a $17 guitar as anniversary gift because he liked the way she sang.  Eventually she started a band and started singing in local honky-tonks in the Washington area.  She finally made her way to Nashville by 1967 she had her first number one hit song.  Lynn wrote songs about her personal life and the relationships that surrounded her.  She often pushed boundaries and sometime sang songs about topics that people did not want to talk about.  Songs that involved cheating, birth control and issues for the average woman.  Some country music stations refused to play her music and some of her songs were even banned from country radio.
