If you thought the State of Louisiana was kind enough to pay double the amount of your tax refund this year, you are wrong and don’t spend the extra money.
According to WDSU-TV, state officials are working overtime to reclaim money that was mistakenly paid out to over 66,000 state residents. The error was discovered this week when a computer glitch overpaid some refunds as much as double the amount.
The computer error was resolved Thursday and now the state is working at reclaiming the overpaid monies. Most of the refunds were direct deposit or paid to a debit card. The state is working with various bank institutions to get the money back.
If you noticed or thought the state was kind enough to pay you double your refund expected, your best bet is not to spend it, the state is coming to reclaim the money.
The state said many of the transactions can be reversed with the banks and the state will get the overpaid money.
You can bet the state will get that money back.
What happens if you already spent the cash? A spokesman for the state says the taxpayer’s bank will contact you seeking a return of the overpayment. One way or another the state will get that money back.
