Let’s hop in our metaphorical time machine and take a trip down memory lane for today in country music history.
On June 12, 1977 Waylon Jennings found himself on top of the US Country Album charts with his album Ol’ Waylon. The album would feature on of Waylons most recognizable songs, a track that featured Willie Nelson, called ‘Luckenbach, Texas (Back to the Basics of Love)’. Ol’ Waylon also featured the Neil Diamond song ‘Sweet Caroline’, a version of ‘Lucille’ originally by Kenny Rogers, and a medley of the two Arthur Crudup songs previously recorded by Elvis Presley. Ol’ Waylon would remain at the top of the charts for 13 consecutive weeks.
On June 12, 1978 Johnny Bond passed away at the age of 63. Bond was best known for his hit ‘Divorce Me C.O.D.’ in 1974. ‘Divorce Me C.O.D.’ was one of Bond’s seven top ten hits on the Billboard country charts throughout his career. Bond would score the biggest hit of his career in 1965 with the comical song ‘Ten Little Bottles’, which saw four weeks at number two on the country music charts. Other hits from Bond’s career include: ‘So Round, So Firm, So Fully Packed’, ‘Oklahoma Waltz’, ‘Love Song in 32 Bars’, ‘Sick Sober and Sorry’, and ‘Hot Rod Lincoln’.
On June 12, 1985 Chris Young was born in Murfreesboro, Teneessee. Young burst on to the country music scene in 2006 when he was declared the winner of the Nashville Star television show; a singing competition which aired on the USA Network. Young’s debut album was self titled and featured two singles: ‘Drinkin Me Lonely’ and ‘You’re Gonna Love Me’. Voices is Young’s second album and saw both ‘Gettin’ You Home (The Black Dress Song)’ and ‘The Man I Want to Be’ reached number one on the country singles chart. Young also reached the top of the country charts in 2012 with ‘Tomorrow’ off his Neon album.
