Let’s hop in our metaphorical time machine and take a trip down memory lane.
On June 13, 1973 Dolly Parton recorded what would go on to be one of the most widely known songs in American history. On this day in 1973 Dolly recorded ‘I will Always Love You’ which was released as the second single from Dolly’s thirteenth solo studio album, Jolene. It’s pretty common knowledge that Parton originally recorded the song for her one time partner and mentor Porter Wagoner. At the time of recording Parton and Wagoner were splitting. ‘I will Always Love You’ was shot further in to stardom when a hugely successful version of the song was recorded by Whitney Houston in 1992. Houston recorded her version for the film The Bodyguard.
On June 13, 1978 Jason Michael Carroll was born in Youngsville, North Carolina. Carroll was an immediate success when burst on to the country music scene. His debut album Waitin’ in the Country produced three consecutive Top 40 country hits for him on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts. The three songs from his debut album were: ‘Alyssa Lies’, ‘Livin our Love Song’, and ‘I Can Sleep when I’m Dead’.
On June 13, 1987 Randy Travis sat a top the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart with ‘Forever and Ever, Amen’. Travis’ song would spend three weeks at number 1. That three week reign was the first multi week chart topping song since September of 1985 when Ronnie Milsap spent two weeks on top the chart with ‘Lost in the Fifties Tonight (In the Still of the Night)’.
On June 13, 2010 the country singer, television host, and businessman Jimmy Dean died at the age of 81. Dean became a national television personality in the 1950’s with his television series ‘The Jimmy Dean Show’. Dean also had the 1961 country crossover hit ‘Big Bad John’. Jimmy Dean, perhaps, is best known as the creator of the incredibly large Jimmy Dean sausage brand.
