If a fruit or vegetable is a little funny-looking or deformed, does it make it not as tasty as its symmetrical counterpart? Apparently, consumers prefer fruit with little or no imperfections. Millions of pieces of fruit get thrown out and wasted because people prefer perfection. Walmart is going to try and cut down on all this wasted produce. Walmart announced that is will test a pilot program in which certain stores in Florida will sell these less desirable fruits and veggies at a lower price. For example, there will be a bag of dented discolored apples labeled, “I’m Perfect.” This bag of apples will be cheaper. Walmart also stated that it will work with farmers to find other uses for the “less than gorgeous” fruits…such as making juice for sliced in lunch kits. Although, Walmart is not the pioneer when it comes to salvaging ugly fruits. Whole Foods did something similar at its California stores last spring.
