No cells allowed! Ugh Admit it. When you see a No Cell Phone sign, you freak out for a brief moment. Then you immediately text friends and family to let them know you may be out of touch for a moment. And finally reluctantly turn off the device. Peace and quiet. Even though life once existed in a world without phones and the internet but life also existed without toilet paper and air conditioning. Humans have gotten used to having everything at their finger tips. Unplugging from the world is not the easiest thing to do. But sometimes we have to unplug and should unplug. Especially when visiting someone at a hospital, or while driving. Some jobs have a no cell phone policy because certain employees get distracted and do not do their job. At least it is not forever, when you clock out Facebook and Instagram will be waiting with notifications to check. Wait, what if it is forever. In a small town in West Virginia that is exactly the case. NO cell phones or WiFi allowed with city limits and the town’s residents prefer it this way. According to the people who live in this ultra peaceful place say you can hear nature and its a calming feeling. The town is the home of the largest radio telescope in the world and in the telescope requires a quiet environment in order to pick up sounds from outer space. I think I like this town. Check the article below:
GREEN BANK, W.Va. — Would you believe there’s a place where no one can use a cell phone? Where Wi-Fi is not allowed? Where even finding a radio station can be a difficult task? There’s a town in West Virginia a few hours to south of Pittsburgh where all that is true.
Green Bank is a place where you can hear nature. Where you can hear yourself think. And that’s because some very important listening is going on.
You see, Green Bank is home to the largest moveable radio telescope in the world.
“For people in the immediate area of the telescope, we really need the quiet,” said Jay Lockman from the National Radio Astronomy Observatory.
They’re trying to pick up very faint signals from outer space, so people in this small town can’t have some of today’s modern conveniences.
For starters, cell phones do not work here. But people here, including Sherry Chestnut at Trent’s General Store, they don’t miss them.
“Absolutely not cause I’ve never had one!” said Chestnut. “So I don’t have anything to miss.”
At the store, which is near Green Bank, they’ll let you use their landline if you’re passing through. Or you can use one of the town’s payphones.
