Kenny Rogers was born in Houston, Texas on August 21, 1938. In high school, Kenny Rogers decided that he was going to be a musician. So he bought a guitar and started a band called the Scholars. The Scholars had that rockabilly sound that was popular during this time. He had some success and managed to score a few hits. Eventually he set out on his own, and began working on his own music.
In 1958, he recorded a hit song, “That Crazy Feeling,” and even performed the song on Dick Clark’s hugely popular show, American Bandstand. Kenny Rogers went on to play with a jazz band for a few years and then a folk pop band before finally forming the group The First Edition. First Edition had a folk, rock and country style that scored a few more hits for Kenny Rogers. The group landed a gig on a music show.
In 1974, Rogers left the First Edition to go solo again but this time focusing on a country sound. A few years later, Roger received nationwide recognition with the hit song, Lucille. He even picked up a Grammy Award for this song. More success followed with the song, The Gambler in 1978.
