Southside on a tear halfway through 2022

Heading into Week 6, Josh Fontenot has his Southside Sharks on the right track.

From a 4-1 start, including a four game winning streak, to taking down opponents like Cecilia, NISH, and Barbe, Southside hasn’t had many things go wrong this year. Not to mention their win over Carencro, which was arguably their biggest win in school history.

“If you would’ve told us we’d be 4-1 halfway through the year, a lot of us would’ve signed up for that” Josh Fontenot said this week. “Now you wish you had that Notre Dame game back to try and be perfect.”

Turnovers were an issue early on for this team, turning the ball over several times in each of their first two games. However, Landon Baptiste and Aaron Ford have done a fantastic job of not only leading the offense, but taking care of the football.

However, the biggest X-factor in the Sharks’ success thus far has been their defense.

Southside has smothered their opponents with blitz packages, getting to the quarterback often and forcing turnovers and bad decisions. The Sharks are only allowing 18.2 points per game so far this season (56 of the 91 came in two games). Atticus Campbell, Lucas Harrington, Isiah Mouton, Bryson Jones, and Carson Goulas are just some of the bigger names that have stepped up to really rattle opposing offenses for the Sharks.

Looking at the back half of the schedule that features Comeaux, Sulphur, Acadiana, Lafayette, and Sam Houston, it doesn’t get easier for Southside as you had through October and November. But if Josh Fontenot’s team has shown anything through the first half of the season, they are prepared to answer any challenge that comes their way.
