Elvis Presley, the King of Rock and Roll, was born in Tupelo, Mississippi on January 8, 1935. He and his family moved to Memphis when he was 13 years old. His career kicked off when he met Sam Phillips at Sun Records. Elvis Presley became part of the Rockabilly music movement. A blend of country rock and blues. His first number one hit song was Heartbreak Hotel. Presley would eventually become one the most influential artists of all time and also become the best selling solo artist in the history of recorded music.
Elvis Presley always stood out in a crowd. In high school, he was one of the only students who wore huge side burns and styled his hair with Vaseline and Rose Oil. His favorite place to hang out was Beale Street, a part of Memphis that had a thriving blues scene. It was in the summer of 1953, that he first visited Sun Records. He went inside to pay for a few minutes of time to record a song for his mother. After he recorded his song, Sam Phillips asked the receptionist to write down and keep a note of his name.
