Sometimes we say things that we don’t really mean, right? You can’t tell every single person you meet, exactly what’s on your mind. Here are ten of the most common things we say when really, we mean something entirely different.
1. What they say: ‘Sounds great, I’ll let you know!’
What they mean: I don’t want to come to that but I’ll tell you in a text tomorrow to avoid the awkwardness of saying it now.
2. What they say: ‘No offense, but…’
What they mean: What I am about to say is going to be offensive, but you can’t get upset because I said no offence.
3. What they say: ‘Of course I won’t tell anyone’
What they mean: If I keep this to myself I’ll explode. I will only tell one person but when I do I’ll start with ‘promise not to tell anyone…’
4. What they say: ‘You look fine’
What they mean: I’d never wear that top with those trousers but we don’t have time for you to change.
5. What they say: ‘Nice bumping into you – let’s catch up soon!’
What they mean: This was enough. I can’t even keep track of my existing circle of friends. I won’t be contacting you.
6. What they say: ‘Congratulations on the wedding! You guys make such a great couple’
What they mean: I can’t believe I’m still single and you’re married. How much did that wedding even cost? I share a bed with my dog.
7. What they say: ‘So, what are you doing with yourself these days?’
What they mean: I want to know which one of us has been the most successful since leaving school.
8. What they say: ‘Really? I don’t think I got that message’
What they mean: I completely forgot you texted me until just now. I hope my confused face is convincing.
9. What they say: ‘I’ll see what I can do’
What they mean: I can’t do much. But I will tell you again in two days that it can’t be done to create the illusion of me having tried.
10. What they say: ‘With all due respect…’
What they mean: …which is hardly any at all.
